Friday Brown spreads her wings…

To those readers who’ve enquired about Friday Brown’s availability overseas—Simon & Schuster will be publishing Friday Brown in the US and Canada, and Hot Key Books will publish in the UK, both in 2013. Woo! Hardcover!

It took a lot of people to make this happen. To everyone who has championed Friday Brown here in Australia—to Text Publishing, my overseas agents, and to Anne Beilby, Grand Poobah of rights and deal-maker extraordinaire—thank you.

A sighting in the wild…

Friday Brown is almost ready to fly. It’s like seeing my youngest off to school. The house is too quiet. I don’t quite know what to do with my freedom.

I’ve had this baby swaddled like a papoose for so long and now it’s out there. Think Mork (Robin Williams before he got craggy) launching his egg.

‘Fly. Be free.’ Splat.

I started writing Friday well before All I Ever Wanted was finished. That’s a three-year gestation, which is pretty gruelling, even by an elephant’s standards. I have the most beautiful cover rough (which may be changed a little) designed by the incomparable W H Chong. There’s nothing quite like seeing the essence of your characters and story perfectly captured in a single image—it took me 70,000+ words to say this:

Friday Brown is a story about grief and obsession. There’s blatant plagiarism (a most sincere form of flattery) and campfire tales and a buried swimming pool. There are parts where you may have to hold your breath. But mostly it’s a story about friendship.

You can check it out and pre-order here at Text.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a blank page to stare at.

I work in a high school library and rave about your writing to the students, “All I Ever Wanted” never sits long on the shelf. I’ll be happy to say ‘and here’s her next book’ . All the best with it!

Hi Catherine. Accolades and awards aside, I have wondered if the YAs are actually reading it in the wild. That’s so good to hear, thank you! V
